Mavis Staples Livin ‘On A High Note – daMusic

Mavis Staples

Mavis Staples is back. And we can only be happy. The seventy-six singer, still feature one from the thousands recognizable voice, it shows on the new ‘Living On A High Note “as a model champion of civil rights movements. Also, we can only be happy. Soon, Staples draws on tour with Bob Dylan (who idolizes her for a few decades); the ideal opportunity to dish the fans some new songs.

The Staple Singer has long earned its stripes. In recent years she got a lot of support from Jeff Tweedy (Wilco), who worked with her in “One True Vine” (2013) and “You Are Not Alone” (2010). On ‘Living On A High Note “Mr. Ward served as producer. And that brought next to a song also some guitar and piano at. For the occasion, a variety of songwriters was summoned to contribute. She thanked all the powerful, funky opener Take Us Back ( “I’ve got friends and I’ve got family / I’ve got help from all the people who love me”).

that opener (written by Benjamin Booker, one of the many young talents Staples as generous as a place awards) takes us to the streets of Chicago and brings some difficult moments of her career reminder ( ‘Chicago was not always easy “). Nevertheless, Staples remains hopeful and optimistic, which is also from the Ben Harper pinned Love And Trust shows.

She manages inter alia to her voice songs like the compelling ballad If It’s a Light to lift a higher level. Which ballad is followed by the upbeat and energetic Action ( “Who’s gonna do it if I do not do it?”), All give them a little further expressed her concerns: she is “tired and scared for our children “. As the current single implies living r & amp; b-star now “on a high note”

Songs Do not Cry or Tomorrow make clear that the hope of a better future is the core of this album.

Side two focuses on quiet and intimate songs where Staples can go deeper, as in Dedicated , a contribution by Justin Vernon. Which is the lubricant for History, Now in which she argues duet with Donny Gerard. And even with a simple guitar riff and essentially ditto song ( One Love ) Staples knows something big to begin.

One of the highlights is the gospel song written by Nick Cave Jesus, Lay Down Beside Me . The sober but nonetheless very pain MLK Song the honor given to close the album off with dignity, a song which M.Ward and Mavis Staples current history by writing to honor the legacy of the late Martin Luther King.

“Living on a High Note ‘, essentially a gift to the fans who supported Soul and gospel legend years now faith, call it a comeback album, the album is an injustice. Staples proves to be still alive and kicking, which bodes well for her tour opening for Bob Dylan.
