Mi Band

The Mi Band was included, a small and limited fitness tracker Xiaomi who works with devices running Android 4.3 or higher by the addition of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE ) in the Android version. Nice to view and of course testing it with the supplied Redmi Note. The only major shortcoming is that the installed ROM of this phablet were still based on Android 4.2.2 Bean Jelly and could be used in combination with the Mi Band. Thus not used at all Obviously the Mi Band thoroughly interrogated, but these will be discussed in a short but succinct separate review

 Xiaomi Redmi Note and MiBand

First Impressions

The unit is in a tight finish cardboard box with some specifications on the back and some other data. Nothing shiny or fancy, just simple. The Redmi Note itself contains a removable back and the first thing I noticed that it still very plastic and is doing well this is what a lot of glitz and glamor. Is While the device at the front is finished in black, the back is white and contains the Xiaomi logo and a small speaker grill. While I did not even have hot or sweaty hands you felt the device is already slipping through your fingers, and that has everything to do with the material, which is not stiff or provides some grip.

On the front are three capacitive buttons found in a red color, which is a nice touch. Top left is to find a FrontCam and buttons, all of whom sit on the right, are carried out in silver. The device contains a removable battery, two SIM Locks and a microSD card slot to also still be found in the unit. Something I just did not know is that use is made of normal SIM cards, so first I could still just arrange An adapter to have any chance to use my micro SIM card.

 Overview Xiaomi Redmi Note

Software

This Redmi Note runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and his fifty various ROM’s there now for it. We have only the standard supplied ROM used, and it is based on MIUI, the software skin which has become Xiaomi include familiar with. On this ROM, the Gapps, or Google apps already preinstalled, but this is something to keep in mind if you possibly want to import the device. I though I use as language, Xiaomi neatly set on my tablets and phones English Dutch to see how well the translation of all menus, items, settings and messages. Here and there is a translation failed quite neat, but I really have not experienced or seen crazy things

 Software Xiaomi Redmi Note
Pre-installed software consists mainly of media applications such as a music and video player, and it is also possible to provide the device with a variety of topics. Security seems paramount to assist Xiaomi, because it also includes an application that requires permissions of applications before you install it or until it has to be started. So I was regularly asked whether X app my contact list could understand or app Y was given permission to read text messages. Also there is a virus preinstalled, it is possible to use an app (work) to clean up memory and you can block contacts

 Software Xiaomi Redmi Note
It is possible to set different homescreens to make, but appdrawer with all applications and games is again present in MIUI. You can of course create folders in order to keep several similar applications or games together and there is a dock site containing four applications. If you double-press the middle button you will see the last four recently opened applications you can end up with a swipe. The button can also be found there again to the memory clean. The icons are all consistent in shape and size and to speak up or not.

 Software Xiaomi Redmi Note
I personally am not the biggest fan of the software and that is because the regular occurrence that the device was not at all like and gave hick-ups, while I was simply too simple scroll between screens. This shows that MIUI still a heavy shell is here and there is not quite well optimized.

Hardware

The version we tested is the enhanced variant of the Note and includes 2GB RAM and a octacore processor MediaTek with a maximum clock speed of 1.7GHz. The camera shoots images at a resolution of 13 megapixels, the FrontCam is a 5 megapixel copy and battery of 3200mAh is to remove the user.

As mentioned earlier to remove the rear bezel is and is not the best material you’ll ever see in a smartphone. These close here and not quite right there, making creaking noises and beeps are heard when you press it, or not testified of the best build quality ever. The unit is a little on the sides which making it good in the hand it back, completed, provided that it does not slip out of your hand through the smooth material.

The screen has a diagonal of 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1280×720 pixels, resulting in a ppi (pixel per inch) of 267. Not the best resolution you’ll ever find in a phablet of this size, but not so much that you can see clear pixels. We must also keep in mind that this device is not a high-end device and the price is not there for it. The viewing angles are good and the colors appear bright. AW A member reported that contained his screen yellow spots, but our copy fortunately had no problems with that.

So there fit two SIM cards in the phone and that is always useful, but something to take to note is that both locks the size of a standard mini SIM card, which have micro or nanoSIMkaarten will not fit without adaptertje. Virtually all phones today are delivered with a micro SIM card slot and also nanoSIMformaat comes up further. You can (as in many Dualsim smartphones) choose which SIM card you want to do something, for example with one SIM card calling and texting, while you want to browse the Internet with another. One of the SIM card locks can work over 3G, while the other slot is only for calling. In addition to the two models that cope with 3G is also a 4G model available on the Chinese market. This is not fully working in the Netherlands, runs on a Snapdragon chipset from Qualcomm and has only one SIM card slot on board.

A notification LED is also present, but I got it with third-party applications like Light Flow not set correctly. You can get into the settings of the Redmi Note itself this does set limits. So you can for just a handful of applications set the color of the LED, where you can choose between red, green, blue and orange, among others.

Occasionally I had ever suffered from hick-ups in the interface, despite the processor and 2GB of RAM and will be partly related to the MIUI software, which then obviously a bit on the heavy side . This time there are no hard rotated benchmark applications, simply because I was the MiBand and numbers do not always tell you everything. Captivated

Battery

The battery is its capacity 3200mAh on paper a very large, but in practice it was still disappointing. The large screen turns slurping more than I thought and will outmoded Android Jelly Bean contributions to the not too best battery life. With intensive use where the screen is on you can see the battery steps backward, resulting in a screen time of just over five hours to constantly playing a movie at 50% brightness.

In my opinion demands you such a big screen just to consume, view, websites and books to read PDF files, view YouTube or occasionally a film, many media but in practice it can shorter than hoped. Simply call, text or check Facebook, where you scroll go well and fine, but for a battery with such a capacity not hours by one timeline I certainly do expect more. For light use, the Redmi Note easily spend a day or two with it, but which do you have a smartphone with such a format chosen? An advantage of this is again that the battery is removable, you can similarly bring extra batteries and places, but whether that is the solution if you want to intensively use the phone, I do not.

Camera

Both cameras Redmi Note shooting great pictures, which happened to the colors of course. The camera interface is easy on the left with a button to switch between the FrontCam and the camera on the back. Through a slide switch you between camera and video mode and there is still to find a knob to adjust flash settings. Is

On the right yet to find a settings button, which a menu is called where you can do all sorts of settings. You should think of different filters or creating HDR or panoramic photos, resolutions, and white balance. Using the button on the right click a photo, and at the bottom right you can see a small preview of the last picture or video. Filming is done in a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels which is a fine resolution and which also little or nothing to be desired

Conclusion

The Xiaomi Redmi Note is a device with an interface and skin where you need love and build quality that certainly is not good at all points and fine. The installed ROM is based on an older Android version and MIUI shell seems a bit too heavy. Despite the high battery capacity drop the performance in some scenarios against, because you want to just consume a lot of content on a phablet. The individual price for the unit to us of around € 160 is to be referred to again interesting, but for that amount is not the Redmi Note on the doormat.

The device is not even for sale in the store and will be what can be a stumbling block imported. Shipping costs make it again a bit pricey and also you also have a chance to import duties or VAT, and the unit may fall back a lot more expensive than initially thought. If you know someone who goes to China and the unit wants to buy the local price (about € 120) and want to bring to you then it is certainly worth considering, but with all this hassle around the device is certainly not for everyone.
