Preview: the Huawei Mate 9 seems to be a good Note-substitute – Personal Computer Magazine

The Huawei Mate 9 and its new Android skin Emui 5.0 were on Thursday shown. On paper the device has a lot to offer and seems to Emui finally better for the day to come. But how is it in practice? We had the opportunity to Level 9 shortly to try out.

The Mate-series of large smartphones existed for years, but now its biggest competitor Samsung Note drops, there are chances for the Degree 9. With its 5,9 inch (15 cm), the device is quite large. Fortunately, the edges around the screen is thin held. This is the Level 9 already a little bit leaner than the Degree 8 (which is a 6 inch screen and is about the same size as the iPhone 7 Plus and Nexus 6P. But, very broekzakvriendelijk it is not.

The build quality is very impressive. The Level 9 is very thin and made of metal, making it luxurious to the touch. The unit weighs 190 grams, which is still pretty light for the size. Moreover, the device is not waterproof, which is a pity.
On the back is a finger print scanner which is very small. That takes some getting used to and even search. Nice is that you get the finger print scanner in other ways, can use, for example, by the gallery to browse or notificatiepaneel have to scroll down to.

FRI

The screen looks good. Colors stand out well, is crazy, only that there is a black lining around the screen seems to sit. Perhaps this has to do with the housing around the screen (the bezels), which is very, very thin. It is remarkable that Huawei has chosen a Full HD resolution screen. This is for normal use, sharp was also on such a screen size. But the Degree to 9 which is less suitable for VR. Our inquiries gave Arne Herkelmann (responsible for the smartphone portfolio of Huawei in Europe) that this choice was made because the Extent 9 is intended for a business user group and people that a more powerful device with long battery life, search. An audience which, according to Herkelmann understand the screen is more use for, for example, reading of text. Things like VR are for this audience is less important.

Camera

the Back is just like the Huawei P9 a dual camera, this camera scored very well already in an earlier smartphone-camera review. For the Level 9, this paper improved a bit. It uses a 20 megapixel monochrome lens and a 12 megapixel ordinary (RGB) lens, which work together to make a picture. The photos that I have with the unit is made saw it on the screen nicely. The camera was remarkably well able to quickly focus and take the picture. Also is there optical video stabilization is present, that seemed to work.

EMUI

The best news, however, was that Huawei its Android skin Emui well under hands has taken. In the fifth version of Emui shows Android and less on iOS seem. The notificatiepaneel is clearer and also the app drawer is back. This looks a lot more clear, so you can home screens self-classify as you wish with widgets and shortcuts, and the full app-list when needed.

The unit responds pretty quickly, that should also well with 4GB of ram and a new Kirin-960 processorlijn. When we benchmarks can be run, it will show how he compares with other smartphones.

Huawei claims Android also to have proper that the operating system quickly must continue to work, even after 18 months of use without going back to factory settings. Also, the battery life is very beneficial. That’s not just because of the adjustments in Android, but also by the big 4.000 mAh battery. How long the battery in practice is to be considered, that should be apparent from a longer test period.
