Samsung saw in the past year for the first time, earnings growth again, though not so much by the smartphones, but due to components and tablets. It is the first profit in seven quarters.
The operating profit for the entire group, which also sells televisions, refrigerators and semiconductors, went up 82 percent to 7.4 trillion won, converted $ 6.5 billion (pdf). Nonetheless, Samsung is still not at the level of 2013, its best year ever.
It was especially the Galaxy Note 5 tablet (or phablet) which caused a rise in the profits of the mobile division 37 percent to 2.4 trillion won, 2.1 billion dollars. The Galaxy S6 Edge +, Galaxy A, Y and Galaxy models also contributed to this process, despite price reductions on the Edge flagship. Samsung said a strong fourth quarter to expect its smartphone division.
Samsung may then still have difficulty competing in the smartphone market, the company remains a dominant player. It shipped in the third quarter more smartphones than Apple and Huawei together, according to figures released yesterday by IDC.
All together manufacturers shipped 355 million smartphones in the third quarter compared with 332 million a year ago. Samsung is number one with 84 million smartphones. Apple was 48 million and 26 Huawei million. Lenovo and Xiaomi follow at greater distances, but do it on the Chinese domestic market just right.
LG appears in the third quarter of 2015 to nearly two million fewer smartphones sold than a year ago, not 16 million, but nearly 15 million. Thus, the turnover fell to 2.69 billion euros. LG have scored well with television sales.
